If you have curly hair, you know how unique (and precious!) your curls are. Curly hair comes with it own set of challenges, especially when it comes to dryness and the concern that coloring hair may deliver. Curly hair can simply look marvellous with some added dimension whether that's golden, honey, caramel, auburn and beyond.... But what's the trade off? Maybe in the past you've sucummed too the dreaded bleach only to watch your curls go straight! Well I'm here to tell you that it doesn't need to be this way and the good news is you can achieve stunning results using gentle alternatives, including high lift colors and glosses that transform hair leaving it healthy, shiny, vibrant and above all else....Curly!
Understanding Curly Hair and Its Needs
Curly hair is generally drier than straight hair due to it's structure. The natural oils from your scalp struggle to travel down the curled strands which is why the more curly/coily the hair, the more porous it is. Studies show that curly hair can lose moisture up to 50% faster than straight hair, making your relationship with water and moisture even more vital!
When contemplating color changes, most people think of bleach to go from dark to blonde but this process can strip curls of their natural moisture, leading to frizz, breakage and change the structure of the curl. A recent survey of Curlies showed that 68% experienced more dryness after using bleach. Understanding what colouring options are available is key to having your cake and eating it!
The High Lift Color Option
High lift color is a fantastic alternative to bleach for anyone wanting a lighter hue without the damage. These tints can lift hair color by up to six levels. This means you can achieve those sought-after blonde shades while preserving your curls’ integrity.
High lift color gently lifts the natural pigment in your hair. This option allows for a beautiful transformation while avoiding the harsh effects of bleach. The results are softer and more nourishing, resulting in curls that shine with health. Colour stays truer for longer without the yellow fade. The only caveat is your existing hair colour needs to be free of any other colour as the rule is 'tint will not lift tint'!
Perfect for: Virgin hair, low to medium maintenance

The Power of Glosses
Glosses provide another excellent option for curly hair. These semi-permanent treatments add color while enhancing shine and hydration.
Glosses can give a subtle color change and cover greys, making them a popular choice for many. One major benefit is that glosses fade gradually, offering a seamless transition as your hair grows. This is particularly advantageous compared to permanent colour that often leave harsh lines. I use both Wella Colour Touch and Shinefinity which are superior glossing products that also have metal detox built in. If it is dimensional results you are looking for, why not consider two different glosses painted in panels for a subtle contrast. Afraid of tone but want all the benefits of a gloss? Then chose a clear gloss that will give amazing shine (perfect for naturals or grey clients) Note: Only permanent colour will give 100% grey coverage.
Perfect for: Any hair type wanting to go tonal or darker, low maintenance

Caring for Your Curls Post-Coloring
No matter which coloring method you choose, caring for your curls afterward is vital. Remember these three points:
Hydration is Key: Use moisturizing shampoos and conditioners such as Boucleme, Curl Smith, Only Curls, Wella Nutricurls, Aveda or Innersense, which are designed (and actually work!) on curly hair.
Regular Deep Conditioning: Incorporate deep conditioning treatments weekly to restore moisture. I love and recommend Boucleme's Intensive Moisture Treatment Mask. (£30.00, 250mls) Follow this up with Boucleme's Protein Booster drops (£29.00, 30mls) to strengthen bonds and improve elasticity.
Protect from Heat: Protect from heat when diffuse drying. Excessive heat can lead to dryness and damage. When you need to diffuse, always apply a heat protectant spray such as Boucleme Curl Defence Spray (£19, 200mls) which protects against both Heat and UV rays.
The full range of Boucleme Products are available in my salon and will be available to buy online soon. Nicky McKenzie Hair - official stockist.
Finally do remember...
A colour consultation should take into account your desired look, how often you want to visit the salon and your particular curl type. Avoid techniques used where bleach is painted and folded in foil as this can really damage the curl pattern. Pintur hair painting is a much better option (Balayage for curlies, available soon) . A beautiful colour change with the right product should enhance and nourish your curls, keeping hair healthy and you happy!
